Mentorship at LUDC

Our mentor at LUDC is an experienced researcher who is available to all researchers and doctoral students at the centre. The mentor can share knowledge, act as advisor, and discuss research and career topics relevant to the mentee. This can be beneficial in terms of scientific research advancement and professional development. The mentor can meet with researchers and PhD students on a one-time basis or on a regular basis over the course of their time at LUDC, depending on the needs of the researchers and students.

Thanks to extensive academic research experience, the LUDC mentor is able to give advice on academic career paths, inform mentees about funding and job opportunities, provide feedback on applications, and assist with coaching for interviews.

Advice and guidance

Our mentor is up to date with scientific research and can, for example, draw the mentee’s attention to relevant scientific publications and give advice about publishing and experimental set up and study design. 

In addition, the mentor can give advice and guidance on presentation and leadership skills, and any other topics related to research and career that are important to the mentee. The mentor can also help expand the mentee’s networks. If needed, the mentor can act as a mediator in case of friction between the mentee and his/her principal investigator.

Meetings can be booked directly with our mentor Claes Wollheim and will take place either in person or online. 

Introduction of our mentor

Claes Wollheim is professor emeritus of experimental diabetes research in Geneva, Switzerland, an honorary member of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, and an elected member of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences and of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO). He regularly spends time at LUDC, where one of his roles is as a mentor. After completing his medicine studies and basic clinical training in Sweden, he became a scientist in Geneva. Claes focused his research on the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes, especially with respect to insulin and glucagon secretion. Claes continues to collaborate with LUDC researchers and enjoys his role as an advisor and mentor to researchers.
